Ohio Credit Flexibility:
Skip the Class, Earn the Credit

Ohio law gives every high school student the right to earn credits through mastery assessments instead of seat time. You do not have to sit through a semester of lectures. You prove you know it, and the credit is yours.

ARCH-EDU prepares you for mastery assessments by extracting the testable logic from every course.

The program

What is Ohio Credit Flexibility?

Credit Flexibility is an Ohio state program established under Ohio Revised Code 3313.603 and State Board of Education policy. It allows students to earn high school credits through methods other than traditional classroom instruction. Instead of spending 120+ hours in a seat, you demonstrate mastery of the course content through an assessment, project, or portfolio.

Every public school district in Ohio is required to have a Credit Flexibility plan. The Ohio Department of Education mandates that districts provide students with the option to earn credit through "demonstrated mastery" -- meaning if you can prove you know the material, the credit is awarded regardless of how you learned it.

This is not a loophole. It is state policy designed to recognize that students learn at different paces and through different methods. The Ohio Department of Education provides full documentation and guidelines for districts and families.

Step by step

How to request a Credit Flex assessment

The process varies slightly by district, but the general framework is the same across Ohio. Here is what to expect.

1

Talk to your school counselor

Ask for the Credit Flexibility application packet. Every district has one. If your counselor is unfamiliar with the program, reference Ohio Revised Code 3313.603 and the Ohio DOE Credit Flexibility guidelines. The district is required to have a plan in place.

2

Identify the course and propose your plan

Your application will ask which course you want credit for and how you plan to demonstrate mastery. The most common method is a mastery assessment (a test). Some districts also accept portfolios, projects, or a combination. Specify that you will prepare independently and take the school's assessment.

3

Prepare with ARCH-EDU

While your application is being reviewed, start studying. Open the course in ARCH-EDU, review the logic nodes, and run Debug Sprints until you can clear them with zero errors. The schematic covers the same content standards that Ohio mastery assessments are built on. When you can trace every logic path cleanly, you are ready.

4

Take the assessment and earn credit

Once approved, your school will schedule the mastery assessment. Pass it, and the credit is posted to your transcript. Most districts use a threshold of 70-80% to award credit. Some award letter grades; others use Pass/Fail. Ask your counselor which system your district uses.

Why ARCH-EDU

Mastery assessments test logic. So does ARCH.

A mastery assessment does not ask you to recite paragraphs from a textbook. It tests whether you understand the rules, processes, and relationships that define a subject. That is exactly what ARCH-EDU extracts.

1:1

Standards-aligned content

ARCH-EDU logic nodes map to Ohio's Learning Standards. The same standards your mastery assessment is built on. No guessing what to study.

</>

Zero filler preparation

Traditional study guides include chapters of narrative that never appear on any assessment. ARCH strips that out. You study only what is testable.

~

Days, not months

When the content is compressed to logic nodes, a full course can be mastered in 1-2 weeks of focused study instead of an entire semester.

ND

Built for neurodivergent learners

If traditional textbooks do not work for your brain, that is by design. ARCH uses logic trees, power terms, and zero-paragraph layouts that work with ADHD and autistic thinking patterns.
